Finding the Perfect Fit: Small Wood burners

The allure of a crackling fire and the comforting warmth of a wood burner is undeniable. But for those with limited space, finding a suitable wood burner can feel like an impossible task. Thankfully, there’s a range of fantastic wood burners available under 420mm in width, perfect for compact spaces without compromising on heat or style.

Advantages of Small Wood burners

Small wood burners offer a wealth of benefits for smaller homes, flats, or even outdoor areas. Here’s why they might be the perfect choice for you:

Space-saving: Their compact size allows them to be installed in areas where a traditional wood burner wouldn’t fit. Think alcoves, hallways, or even on a boat!
Efficient heating: Modern small wood burners are incredibly efficient at producing heat, keeping you warm and toasty despite their size.
Quick heat-up: Due to their smaller firebox, they reach operating temperature faster than larger models, providing warmth quicker.
Focal point: Even a small wood burner can become a stunning focal point in your room, adding a touch of rustic charm.
Eco-friendly: Wood is a renewable resource, making a wood burner a more sustainable heating option compared to traditional methods.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Small Wood burner

Before diving headfirst into the world of miniature wood burners, here are some crucial factors to keep in mind:

  • Heat output: Small wood burners naturally have a lower maximum heat output than their larger counterparts. Carefully assess the size of the room you want to heat and choose a wood burner with a suitable BTU (British Thermal Unit) rating.
  • Fuel type: Most small wood burners are designed to burn seasoned logs. However, some models may also be suitable for smokeless fuels like multi-fuel or wood pellets.
  • Efficiency rating: Look for a wood burner with a high efficiency rating. This ensures you get the most heat out of your fuel, reducing running costs and emissions.
  • Clearance requirements: Clearance from surrounding combustible materials is essential for safety. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific clearances required for your chosen model.
  • Aesthetics: Small wood burners come in a variety of styles, from traditional cast iron to sleek contemporary designs. Choose one that complements your existing décor.

Inset Wood Burners

As we are talking about small spaces, it is worth mentioning inset stoves and wood burners.

Because of the need for at least 50mm each side, even for the smallest free standing stove, they can actually require more space than a larger (and more powerful) inset stove. Designed to be fitted into a 16″ fireplace opening, these space-saving wood burners offer a more traditional look with up to date efficiency and output ratings.

Look for the Pevex 30 Slimline or the Arada Solution Inset for an inset stove, or the Stovax Riva or the Charlton and Jenrick Fireline ranges – both excellent examples of cassette stoves.
